IS THERE TRUTH IN ADVERTISING?

felicitous

Is there truth in advertising? If so, we are in trouble, as half the men in the country seem to be impotent. Television commercials and the sports pages of the newspapers are showing a lot of help for these men with the use of Viagra and Cialis, and now many of the unfortunate souls appear to be suffering from low testosterone. I can’t tell you how sorry I am.

It caught the attention of my husband of 67 years immediately when the ads began showing gorgeous women smiling delightedly while their male partners were leering with anticipation. If we really saw that expression we’d call for the cops. It’s interesting to me that some of these afflicted males look barely out of their 20’s. What a shame. I pointed out to him that these were commercials and not real people. He was not convinced, so I called his attention to the rest of the ad: those with health conditions should abstain, and an erection lasting longer than 5 minutes is too long.

I’m sure you remember the famous scene in Gone With The Wind where Rhett Butler carries Scarlet up to her bedroom? The door closes and that is all we were exposed to. Clark Gable didn’t see the need for leering, and while Scarlet may have simpered for Ashley, she didn’t waste any of it on Rhett.

The now common practice of sharing the bedroom and it’s attendant problems with the public is getting out of hand. The newest ad is a pill aimed at the women of the world who are apparently having a problem constraining the men who have overdosed on raising their testosterone level.

Frankly, I don’t believe a word of it. cat

  1. It’s a syndrome, though cultural rather than medical.

We had Ingrid Bergman and Humphrey Bogart in Casablanca. Today? Miley Cyrus twerks with Robin Thicke.

We had plenty of rock and roll, and the foolishness of “The Purple People Eater”, but we had Django Reinhardt & Stéphane Grappelli, too.

We flirted and teased and ran out behind the barn for a stolen kiss, but I daresay we enjoyed ourselves more than the pornographers hiding behind the feminist label today.
(Context: I just read an article about the feminists at Columbia University making a porn flick in the library there, because there are only male names on the facade, and it’s feeling oppressive to them. Sigh.)

Anyway – it is getting a bit over the top. If some of these folks would give up their medications and try a little Tuca, Tuca, they might enjoy themselves more. 😉

    1. What a cute video Linda! Thanks for sending it. I must admit I had not heard of
Tuca Tuca. When you hear them recount all the side effects these and other meds have, it’s a wonder people take any of them. Each generation has it’s “:feel-good encour”agers. Ours was the jitterbug and swing as well as Django. We had more choices I guess.

    1. Keep calm Richard.

Speaking of nostalgia, Dr. Advice and I have been watching the series “All Creatures Large and Small” on T. V. about the Yorkshire vets in the 30’s and 40’s. It always leaves you with a great sense of nostalgia for the simple life. Although I would not relish delivering a calf at midnight in the middle of winter in the middle of the night! Nevertheless, they were sweet uncomplicated stories.

  2. I don’t know how it is in other countries, but here in Canada the pharmaceutical companies must include the possible side effects in their commercials. It makes for a long list of horrible outcomes intoned by a male voice while the pictures of happy couples continue to roll by.
