METAMORPHOSIS

We all have stress in our lives; some is good stress and some is not so good. A prospective wedding can be both in terms of stress. I remember both my daughters stress level before their big day. While perusing Webster’s dictionary, I discovered that there were several definitions for the word “Metamorphosis. “a striking alteration in circumstances” seems to fit that situation. Nothing seems to go the way planned, but at the last-minute, everything perks along just fine. For some prospective brides or grooms, the sense of doom crashes down while walking down the aisle. Only the brave or the foolish continue walking.

It’s an unnatural time for most of us. The sometimes months long preparation, the economic guilt, the frayed emotions erupting into meltdowns should send the happy couple off to elope in a far away place by themselves.

The photos of the joyous couple with mile wide smiles hurrying to get on with things, were not photos of me seventy-two years ago. At eighteen and twenty, we were children who thought they were grown up enough to handle the adult world. I will admit that I for one, doubted it. It wasn’t the first time I was wrong of course, nor the last. We have watched too many marriages come and go, and I am pleases to say that after 72 years with the same handsome guy, and after producing children, grandchildren and great=grandchildren, life is still good. On September 7 I will make him his obligatory bowl of oatmeal, give him a kiss and wish him many more days sitting across from the same girl who wasn’t quite sure it would work out. Happy Anniversary Doctor Advice, I couldn’t have done it without you.

  1. Happy Anniversary to you both!! 72 years…omg are you two role models for us. (And I thought 47 was doing well). This post is darling, just like you. And btw, I am looking forward to your painting.

  2. What a lovely tale of marital bliss. You both deserve a noble price. Bravo, Kayti and Dr A.
There I thought to get a tale of a large beetle doing the rounds at night, scaring the light out of me.
We went through a lot of trouble organising a grand wedding but decided to ditch it and went to the registry office instead, with pancakes afterwards. That was in 1965. So far so good. We fought some magnificent battles and overcame all.
I make the morning coffee and Helvi makes the bed.

    1. He makes the coffee and I make the bed as well. Maybe that is the secret. He also does the dishes while I catch up on the news. I imagine those pancakes were the best she ever had. I was asked to make pancakes the morning after the wedding, but I did not know how to do that. I learned. Speaking of glorious battles, I might be able to teach you a few tricks, but you seem to be doing OK alone. Thank you for your good wishes, I hope they last a few more years. Every day is a gift.

  3. Congratulations to you and the good Dr. Advice! So many years together is such a gift, and an experience very few get to enjoy, for any number of reasons. Oatmeal and kisses seem a perfect celebration. And as for the girl who wasn’t sure it would work out? A little uncertainty is good for the soul, and for marriages, and for nearly everything in life. The ones who are absolutely certain of everything should be avoided, I think!

    1. Thank you for the good wishes. However I made a mistake in dates, the actual date is the 8th, which doesn’t really matter, but he pointed that out to me. He is getting oatmeal anyway. Yes, it is a gift even to be around, let alone together. I wonder if studies have been made as to the reasons. I remember that the consensus was that it would never work. Perhaps it can be attributed to sheer contrariness, of which I have quite a lot.

    1. Thanks Charlotte. Congratulations to both your brother and your parents. It is always exciting to realize you have spent most of your life with another person and it’s still fun. We met when I was 16 and he was 18 at an end of school year party. He came from another school and had just graduated. It was right before he left for the war so I didn’t see him for a couple of years. It still sounded good so here we are 72 years later.
